Want to Save Time? Stop Cleaning!
September 5, 2007
Do you always feel like your house isn’t clean enough? Maybe it’s time to stop cleaning.
“We are slaves to microscopic specks of lint, hard-water smudges, and the relentless pursuit of dust bunnies. Brainwashed by Hollywood and slick photo spreads, we chase after unrealistic expectations,” says Jeff Bredenberg, author of How To Cheat at Cleaning.
He says there are many things you can simply stop cleaning right now, including:
** Sneakers. Just buy dark-colored ones and wear them until they fall apart.
** Shower curtain liners. They’re cheap. Throw your mildewed liner out and buy a new one every six months.
** Making the bed. Give it up — doctor’s orders.
I’m not sure I’m ready to stop making the bed. But I’m not about to clean my sneakers, unless I happen to step in something untoward. But he’s definitely got a point about other things on his list. What do you think?

ITA on the shower curtain. I stopped cleaning mine a year or so ago — I just get replacements from the dollar store. It’s just not worth the hassle, and I could never get ALL the mildew off.
I have a plain white fabric shower curtain liner that I use for my regular shower curtain. Fabric alone works just as well as plastic at keeping water where it belongs and it’s not so claustrophobic. And I just pop in the washer with bleach (if it needs it) and hang it back up to dry!
“Throw away/replace”is fine if you dn’t give a rats about the environment. The cotton solution sounds far better.
Ditto on the white fabric shower curtain liner – easy and more environmentally friendly.
I have friends who pop their plastic shower curtain in the washer with some vinegar to clean it, then re-hang. Easier than spraying with cleaner and sponge. eventually they get some tears that way, so they reuse them as drop cloths.
