Start ‘em Off Right; Five Tips for Handling Homework
August 2, 2007
The battle over homework was probably the thing I dreaded most about “Back-to-School”. Organizing a homework routine helps a lot. Here are five tips I found extremely helpful when my kids were little:
- Have a regular homework time everyday. Usually the earlier, the better; before they’re too tired. We had a 30-minute snack and rest time when they got home.
- Designate an area for homework: the kitchen table or a desk in their room – some place neat and quiet.

- Keep all their school supplies close at hand. Small drawers and desktop organizers work great! Color coded organizers let them sort by subject.
- Have them tackle the harder assignments first. They’ll complain at first, but they’re relieved by the end when they get to the easy stuff.
- Give them a place to keep track of long term assignments. Have an assignment posting place like a message board or wall calendar. Check with them daily at first to help them remember to post new ones and work on existing ones.
Help them develop organized study habits early in life and the good habits will last a lifetime!
How do you keep homework organized and running smoothly in your home?
These tips have actually worked well for me. I just recently went back to school after being out for about 10 years and was completely unorganized as far as managing time for studding and homework.
That’s great, Tasha!
Guess I didn’t realize I’d be helping adults as well – cool!
