SPACE TREAT: Embrace your laziness?
August 4, 2009
All this hot and humid weather is making me feel lazy. How about you?
You may be relieved to hear that when it comes to getting organized, laziness can be your biggest ally. The trick is to design your system around your “laziest common denominator”, meaning, doing things with the least number of steps.
Often the biggest culprits on the path to disorganization are the smallest, such as: punching holes, opening a drawer, typing out a label, lifting a lid, having inadequate supplies and getting out of your chair. These actions seem easy enough on their own but when added to deadlines, overbooked schedules and just too much to do, the combination is a recipe for disorganization.
Instead of punching holes in documents for binders, print directly onto 3-hole punched paper or just drop into file folders. If you’re battling an old filing cabinet and opening the drawers is a struggle, get a new one or use it only for archival documents. Try a desk top file for all your daily filing. Instead of printing out labels for your files, hand write them. Instead of your favorite pens leaking all over or drying up because the cap is missing, use push pens. Instead of papers piling up because you still need to buy filing supplies, always keep a surplus on hand. Instead of keeping your filing cabinet across the room, rearrange the space so that you don’t even have to get out of your chair to file papers.
Want to get out from underneath your stuff? Limit the amount of steps it takes to maintain your system. Go ahead. Embrace your laziness!!!!
I hope you’re enjoying a Space-tacular Summer,

An excellent tip! I only realized now that my laziest common denominator would definitely be the hole punching! Whenever I get to that part when organizing my documents I somehow find another thing to busy myself with. Thanks!
An even lazier solution is to go paperless and maintain all of your documents on your computer, accessible by your PDA.
Create folders with similar to your manila file folders. Scan documents into the folders. Shred the documents. It is really that easy.
Ditching the paper was very freeing, and allows me more time to be lazy as there is less paper to manage.
