August De-clutter challenge – Week One!
August 8, 2008
Ok, so I don’t have pictures because I didn’t have my camera when I de-cluttered. And I didn’t spread it out over seven days because it’s too hard with work. But I did de-clutter seven things!
I spent Sunday afternoon de-cluttering the five drawers in my nightstand and then de-cluttered my bathroom cabinet and the étagère over the toilet (seven things!).
The étagère left the house entirely and was replaced with these shelves. Now they only store towels instead of being a catch-all.
From the cabinet I got rid of an old container of potpourri, several empty cardboard boxes, and a broken flashlight. This made room for the necessities that moved from the old étagère.
In the top drawer of my nightstand, I organized my jewelry into these organizer boxes according to matching sets (necklace and earrings). They’re perfect – I just stack two of them without the lids and I can get to everything easily. Got rid of a couple of necklaces I don’t wear any more.
The second drawer gave up some old lotion and lip balm, unused key chains and binder clips.
Third drawer lost little actually – just a couple of eyeglass cases.
Fourth drawer saw the departure of a couple of half used pads of paper, some old planner inserts, a wallet, and a couple of travel jewelry cases.
Fifth drawer lost the most weight. There was a basket of old jewelry that had tipped over and the contents had been rolling around the bottom of that drawer for months! Got rid of most of that. And several magazines and some cute little stuffed animals (that I haven’t found a suitable home for yet – not convinced that I want to give them up. Maybe they can decorate my office.)
And there are my seven things de-cluttered! I’ll take pics of the next weeks work!
You did the right thing. Just take one part of the clutter and get through it before you go on to another part. I started with my garage.
Ahh, my kingdom for a garage…
Good for you! Yeah, this challenge is making de-cluttering less of a chore and more of a, well, a challenge!
Thanks, Shirley
🙂
I got rid of a super huge box of my own one-size-too-small clothes from before the kids were born, plus a couple of small boxes.
Got rid of a large sack of toddler clothes and a few toys.
Donated it all to Goodwill, then went inside and picked up the clothes my other child needs for next season. 🙂
The net effect is still in my favor–much more left than returned.
Oh Eva, I’m so proud of you!!!
I’ve also been inspired by everybody’s superb efforts. I need to go back into my cupboards and declutter some more stuff, myself.
Of course, since I’m a handbag freak, that’s where most of MY clutter is!
Well done!!!
