Back to School – With a Twist!

home-classroomWhen I was home schooling, I tried to give our “classroom” the look and feel of an authentic classroom.

I guess part of the reason was that I didn’t want my kids to feel so “different” from their non-home-schooling friends. And the other part was because it was just plain fun!

I had a few things to make our home school feel like a classroom; I had a blackboard and a giant calendar and world map. And I had the alphabet in big fun letters across the wall. One of my home schooling friends even had individual desks for her two kids.

Stacks and Stacks has a new section called Classroom & Educational.

I would have loved to have a bookcase like this to display all of my kid’s reading books, or an art supply cart! There’s even a science center to display science projects they are working on!

Hmmm…designing home school classrooms, now that would be a fun consulting job to have.

    My office is in a room that may as well be a basement. I’ve thought about painting a big window on the wall with a nice spring scene. A little paint can go a long way in brightening up a school room (or office)!

    We make due with small desks shoved into nooks and crannies of the ONE room that is our son’s bedroom, the craft room, the entry coat closet (portable one), the livingroom, the dining room, and the kitchen … in about 400 sq. ft. We live in a 900 sq ft. mobile home. I’ve discovered that educational place mats are a useful tool in a house this small. They can prop the ones they are working on in front of their desk or study while eating. Because I don’t drive, I like resources at my fingertips and so our bookshelves are overpacked. Organization has me at a loss though – nothing seems to work. Even so, my 3 kids are happy and healthy and enjoy learning. So I guess a fancy space isn’t necessary. Oh – we also make use of our outdoor picnic table whenever possible – especially for messy projects.
