Dorm Organization Tips
July 31, 2012
Dorm life is a rite of passage for most students and while it involves wonderful experiences like making new friends and gaining independence as an adult, it also involves learning to live organized. Anyone who lived in a dorm their first year of college can understand the space-issues I am talking about. And most teenagers don’t have a knack for organizing or keeping a tidy space (I know because I was one). It is okay if organizing does not come naturally, it’s just one of those things you have to learn as a young adult, like paying your own bills or cooking meals for yourself.
Shoes can be especially tricky to organize, especially in compact living spaces. When my friend’s daughter moved into the dorm last year, I encouraged her to get a 50 pair stacking metal and plastic shoe rack. Now, she herself did not own 50 pairs of shoes, but the shoe storage rack was big enough to house both hers and her roommate’s shoes. The roommate was especially grateful for this! Because it stands at four and a half feet tall, the metal shoe rack does not take up a lot of space which is important in dorm rooms.
If that particular shoe rack does not work for you or someone you know who’s moving into a dorm this fall, then I would consider getting a stacking shoe rack like a bamboo shoe rack which comes in a set of 2. This too is a space saving shoe rack because it can be stacked vertically to take up less floor space in the room or in the closet. And if you only need one of the shoeracks, buy it with your roommate and split the pair up between the two of you. This is also an economical way to go about it, which is helpful for any starving student!
