Dance This Mess Around – Music To Clean By
October 15, 2007
As a child of the 80s, I believe that there is no ill in this world that a good mix tape cannot cure. Whether I was trying to impress a new crush or preparing for a road trip, I would take great pride in creating a musical masterpiece.
I’ve also started using the power of the mix tape to get myself to do those things that I otherwise have a hard time getting fired up to do. The best thing about creating your own list of songs to enjoy is that you don’t have to waste time (or get distracted by) skipping tracks on CDs, or be bored by radio commercials. Since I’ve had great success using a personal mix for jogging (which I used to hate to do, and now I kind of look forward to), I figured it was time to start using a mix for cleaning! And it works like a charm!
The formula to a legendary mix tape is this: songs you love with all your heart + pure cheese that you can’t help but love = an awesome musical journey. This is especially true for a Clean House Mix Tape – you need the songs that you sing along with, mixed with the songs you smile along with. Here’s mine:
- What You Waiting For – Gwen Stefani
- I Turn My Camera On – Spoon
- Road To Nowhere – Talking Heads
- Phone Call #27 – Admiral Twin
- Glory Days – Bruce Springsteen
- Rock ‘n’ Roll Lifestyle – Cake
- Pump It Up – Elvis Costello
- Change Your Mind – The Killers
- Rock Lobster – The B-52s
- November Rain – Guns N’ Roses
- I Held Her In My Arms – Violent Femmes
- Toxic – Britney Spears
- Chicago – Sufjan Stevens

So, what about you? What songs get you inspired? Let me know in the comments! I’m always looking to start a new mix!
PS – I know that the term ‘mix tape’ is kind of outdated – but I can’t help it! Nothing else sounds right. Mix CD? Mix Playlist? No way!
I love to use http://www.pandora.com/ for my “mixed tapes”. You pick a favorite artist/group and it picks songs that they’ve put out plus other artists songs like them.
Pandora’s amazing!!
I also have to throw in a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T from Aretha.

Its hard for me to clean house without my Ipod. Its makes the cleaning time go by so much faster.
I like pandora alot, but the problem there is they never seem to play the song or artiest that you picked to begin with… just stuff that sounds like them… if you check out http://www.vyrusMusic.com you can stream and download whatever you want, and if you sign up you can create an imbedable playlist that you can access from any internet connect….

Music is definitely helpful when cleaning…I like Bruce’s “Out in the Street” so i can pretend that I am in the street when I am really in the kitchen 🙂
What a great page,
there nothin better than blasting your music whilst cleaning 😀
fantastic!
So my mom has the perfect cleaning mix but for the life of me i cannot remember any of the songs! I need some motivation, can any one suggest some up beat songs??
I always love to create mixes that go from drastic changes in mood… a fast beat hip hop song with lots of bass to Fiona Apple. Its really fun.
